i''ll give it another few listens and get back to you. even with that, besides some very slick 32nd (64th?) note flourishes i'm not sure what's got you guys all up in arms. i'm listening to the song/music, not the guitar playing. not sure what you'd call this "sensation", but i don't think i'm just pulling this all out of my ass). Same with this Vai track, the first thing that came to mind is "i feel like i'm watching Top Gun or something" (like whenever someone posts some Holdsworth, etc i feel like i'm ten years old watching tv. watching the Ken Burns 'Jazz' doc i was very familiar with every era of jazz just from constant exposure to it via early cartoons and wherever else i heard it played in the background. you know? like with jazz, i never went out of my way to listen to it but i heard it all the time growing up. I've never "listened" to jazz fusion, but i've heard it a million times. it was a very "safe/popular" sound for them to use at the time, and it made it's way into our culture in all sorts of outlets. the 'Entertainment Tonight' song isn't a great example, but isn't far off. (same with blues in the 70s/80s as well, for the most part it's all just a generic homogenized sound.) this was used all over the place in tv shows, etc through the 80s. it all sounds like that late 70s or early 80s "light jazz" sound, which became a standard thing. most jazz fusion backing in general sounds almost exactly the same, like they're using a "jazz fusion" preset on a keyboard workstation or something.
